Resumen: Classics in Cartography provides an intellectually-driven reinterpretation of a selection of ten touchstone articles in the development of mapping scholarship over the last four decades. The ‘classics’ are drawn exclusively from the international peer-review journal Cartographica and are reprinted in full here. They are accompanied by newly commissioned reflective essays by the original article authors, and other eminent scholars, to provide fresh interpretation of the meaning of the ideas presented and their wider, lasting impact on cartographic research. The book provides an equal balance of influential articles from the past and current commentaries which highlight their impact and current context. Read in combination the original ‘classic’ articles and these new reflective essays demonstrate how cartography works as a powerful representational form and explores how various different aspects of mapping practice have been conceptualized by an influential set of academic researchers.

Resumen: In this collection of essays J. B. Harley (1932-1991) draws on ideas in art history, literature, philosophy, and the study of visual culture to subvert the traditional, "positivist" model of cartography, replacing it with one that is grounded in an iconological and semiotic theory of the nature of maps. He defines a map as a "social construction" and argues that maps are not simple representations of reality but exert profound influences upon the way space is conceptualized and organized. A central theme is the way in which power―whether military, political, religious, or economic―becomes inscribed on the land through cartography. In this new reading of maps and map making, Harley undertakes a surprising journey into the nature of the social and political unconscious.

Resumen: Esta obra tiene un atractivo especial para el lector por su importancia metodológica y filosófica. J. B. Harley es reconocido por su dedicación e interés en la cartografía, a la que considera no como una ciencia que se ocupa de la descripción de lugares por medio de mapas, sino como una ciencia capaz de aportar una visión s ocial. En este sentido, los mapas son algo más que una mera descripción; son como una mirada hacia el mundo de quien los trazó, hacia fuera y hacia delante... Harley rechaza la visión individualista del cartógrafo, opina que éste no sólo debe registrar impresiones del mundo exterior y ser capaz de trasladarlas a la forma gráfica, sino que debe proporcionar una visión más amplia, como corresponde a una construcción social. Los siete ensayos que contiene este libro son un reflejo de las opiniones del autor y de su muy personal concepción acerca de la filosofía de la historia cartográfica. Los textos fueron editados y publicados como obra póstuma.
