Resumen: El arquitecto Edwin Haramoto Nishikimoto, principal fundador del Instituto de la Vivienda (INVI) en 1985, propuso y desarrolló una metodología de diseño arquitectónico para abordar el proceso habitacional, en plena dictadura militar, cuando se estaba empezando a instalar el modelo de provisión de viviendas, acorde con los profundos cambios que tuvo el desarrollo económico del país. En ese contexto, el arquitecto Haramoto tuvo una doble inspiración, por una parte, el estudio del hábitat popular, informal o precario, en cuanto proceso, en donde se amalgama la acción del habitante y la acción de las políticas públicas y, por otra parte, la búsqueda de la articulación de la arquitectura y sus métodos de diseño, con ese proceso. En aquel momento: inicio de un nuevo modelo habitacional, el habitante histórico, sujeto o destinatario de las políticas habitacionales, pasaba de ser el principal protagonista en el derecho a la vivienda, a un "beneficiario" de las mismas. El diseño arquitectónico no tenía respuestas o herramientas que intentasen responder a esos cambios y en el país no existía interés en cuanto a que el conocimiento prospectara esas interrogantes. Edwin Haramoto logró dar respuesta a esa coyuntura y para ello aportó sus conocimientos sobre teoría arquitectónica y metodología del diseño, que pueden ser extrapolables a encrucijadas latinoamericanas similares. La ruta que este investigador inició en su ingreso al estudio de la vivienda social y la comprensión de ella en cuanto a fenómeno socio-físico, logró provocar convencimiento en otros investigadores y produjo sinergias que se expanden más allá de la vivienda social y hasta el presente. De esa sinergia y de las nuevas interrogantes que de ellas se derivan, dan cuenta los variados capítulos e investigaciones aplicadas que forman parte de este libro.

Resumen: Desde sus primeros años de estudiante, cuando vio por primera vez una estructura geodésica, el autor quedó impresionado tanto por su forma como por su alta resistencia. Poco después, descubrió que estas cúpulas son generadas por un solo poliedro regular, el icosaedro. Esto lo motivó a indagar acerca de la formación de formas geodésicas empleando otros poliedros regulares e irregulares. Es de esta manera que desarrolla una extensa investigación, la cual nos presenta en esta obra. El trabajo se inicia con una breve revisión de algunos elementos geométricos tales como polígonos y poliedros, y de cómo estos se relacionan con el mundo de la arquitectura el arte y la naturaleza. Luego se revisan otros conceptos tales como la geometría fractal y las estructuras tensegríticas, las cuales se desarrollan de tal forma que se genera una simbiosis estructural donde se fusionan estos tres conceptos. Resumen: What is the role of design research in the types of insight and knowledge that architects create? That is the central question raised by this book.
