Resumen :  This book began as a catalogue for an exhibition, "Houses by Bart Prince", which I curated for the University of New Mexico Art Museum in 1989. From the composition of the catalogue to its revision as the present book, I have gratefully depended on the help and advice of various institutions and many people. The Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts partly funded the exhibitionand catalogue. The invitationto deliver the 1989 Lee A. Bryant Lecture in Architecture and Design at Kansas State University allowed me to refine some key points in my interpretation of Bart Prince's work. Bart Prince and two of his assistants, Martin Grummer and William Kleinschmidt, gave me the freedom to rummage through the office files and drawers, while they patiently tolerated my constant interruptions of their work over a two-year period. Among the University of New México Art Museum staff, Peter Walch, Susan Nunemaker Braun, and Joseph Traugott particularly deserve my thanks. Robert Reck and Damian Andrus provided most of the photographs of Bart Prince's work, thus guaranteeing that at least the majority of this book's illustrations (excluding the author's) satisfy the expected professional standard; David De Long kindly furnished additional images. Marcus Whiffen, Donald Schlegel, David Van Zanten, William Mead, and Michele Penhall have individually either offered information that improved my thesis, or usefully critiqued my thesis, or have done both. Ar the University of New Mexico Press, Elizabeth Hadas, Dana sbury, and Kristina Kachele have guided my book through its final metamorphosis into print.
