Resumen: Antropología de lo barrial, de Ariel Gravano, abre la posibilidad de profundizar en una de las realidades más cotidianas (la vida, el imaginario, la identidad y la cultura de barrio) desde una mirada oblicua, enriquecedora y apta para el tratamiento estratégico y operativo de problemas que muchas veces son ocultados desde las naturalizaciones del sentido común y, por lo tanto, quedan estérilmente reducidos en su abordaje efectivo. Como una paradoja buscada, el trabajo analítico emprendido por Gravano rodea estas problemáticas sin ocuparse de ofrecer recetas para su solución. Las trata con instrumentos creados a partir de considerar a la realidad barrial como una producción simbólica. A partir de la interpretación antropológica, la lectura va y vuelve, entra y sale desde los procesos macrohistóricos que enmarcan a lo urbano a las particularidades estudiadas en forma menuda. La sensación es verificar que la dimensión contradictoria de la vida social interpenetra los instrumentos menos visibles del pensar, de sentir y de construir identidades, mediante una producción ideológica y simbólico-cultural (lo barrial -al decir del autor-) que se constituye, aún dentro de la dialéctica de la reproducción, en alterna y porfiada transformadora de la Historia. La base del libro es la tesis de doctorado en la Universidad de Buenos Aires y sus destinatarios específicos son los profesionales, investigadores y agentes le lo urbano y del trabajo barrial.

Resumen: Visions of the City is a dramatic account of utopian urbanism in the twentieth century. It explores radical demands for new spaces and ways of living, and considers their effects on planning, architecture and struggles to shape urban landscapes. Such visions, it shows, have played a crucial role in informing understandings and imaginings of the modern city. The author critically examines influential traditions in western Europe associated with such figures as Ebenezer Howard and Le Corbusier, uncovering the political interests, desires and anxieties that lay behind their ideal cities, and drawing out their 'noir side'. He also investigates oppositional perspectives from the time that challenged these rationalist conceptions of cities and urban life, and that disturbed their dreams of order, especially from within surrealism. At the heart of this richly illustrated book is an encounter with the explosive ideas of the situationists. Tracing the subversive practices of this avant-garde group and its associates from their explorations of Paris during the 1950s to their projects for an alternative 'unitary urbanism', David Pinder convincingly explains the significance of their revolutionary attempts to transform urban space and everyday life. He addresses in particular Constant's vision of New Babylon, finding within his proposals for future spaces produced through nomadic life, creativity and play a still powerful challenge to imagine cities otherwise. The book not only recovers vital moments from past hopes and dreams of modern urbanism. It also contests current claims about the 'end of utopia', arguing that reconsidering earlier projects can play a critical role in developing utopian perspectives today. Through the study of utopian visions, it aims to rekindle elements of utopianism itself.

Resumen: Why is public space disappearing? Why is this disappearance important to democratic politics and how has it become an international phenomenon? Public spaces are no longer democratic spaces, but instead centres of private commerce and consumption, and even surveillance and police control. "The Politics of Public Space" extends the focus of current work on public space to include a consideration of the transnational - in the sense of moving people and transformations in the nation or state - to expand our definition of the 'public' and public space. Ultimately, public spaces are one of the last democratic forums for public dissent in a civil society.
