La ciudad letrada

La ciudad letrada
Rama, Angel
2004
Santiago, Chile : Tajamar.   195 p.

The city of collective memory

The city of collective memory : its historical imagery and architectural entertainments
Boyer, M. Christine
1996
Cambridge, Massachusetts : The MIT Press.   x, 560 p.
Resumen : Christine Boyer faces head-on the crisis of the city in the late twentieth century, taking us on a fascinating journey through theaters and museums, panoramas and maps, buildings and institutions that are used to construct a new reading of the city as a system of representation, a complex cultural entity.
Boyer brings together elements and concepts from geography, critical theory, architecture, literature, and painting in a synthetic and readable work that is broad in its reach and original in its insights.
What finally emerges is a sense of the city reinvigorated with richness and potential.
The City of Collective Memory describes a series of different visual and mental models by which the urban environment has been recognized, depicted, and planned.
Boyer identifies three major "maps": one common to the traditional city -- the city as a work of art; one characteristic of the modern city -- the city as panorama; and one appropriate to the contemporary city -- the city as spectacle.
It is a richly illustrated and documented study that pays considerable attention to the normally hidden and unspoken codes that regulate the order imposed on and derived from the city.
A wide range of secondary historical literature and theoretical work is considered, with evident debts to structuralist analysis of urban form represented by Aldo Rossi, as well to much post-structuralist criticism from Walter Benjamin to the present.

Great streets

Great streets
Jacobs, Allan B.
1993
Cambridge, Mass. : MIT Press.  ix, 331 p.
Resumen : Which are the world's best streets, and what are the physical, designable characteristics that make them great? To answer these questions, Allan Jacobs has surveyed street users and design professionals and has studied a wide array of street types and urban spaces around the world.
With more than 200 illustrations, all prepared by the author, along with analysis and statistics, Great Streets offers a wealth of information on street dimensions, plans, sections, and patterns of use, all systematically compared. It also reveals Jacobs's eye for the telling human and social details that bring streets and communities to life.
An extensive introduction discusses the importance of streets in creating communities and criteria for identifying the best streets.
The essays that follow examine 15 particularly fine streets, ranging from medieval streets in Rome and Copenhagen to Venice's Grand Canal, from Parisian boulevards to tree-lined residential streets in American cities. Jacobs also looks at several streets that were once very fine but are less successful today, such as Market Street in San Francisco, identifying the factors that figure in their decline.
To broaden his coverage, Jacobs adds briefer treatments of more than 30 other streets arranged by street type, including streets from Australia, Japan, and classical antiquity in addition to European and North American examples.
For each of these streets he has prepared plans, sections, and maps, all drawn at the same scales to facilitate comparisons, along with perspective views and drawings of significant design details.
Another remarkable feature of this book is a set of 50 one square-mile maps, each reproduced at the same scale, of the street plans of representative cities around the world.
These reveal much about the texture of the cities' street patterns and hence of their urban life. Jacobs's analysis of the maps adds much original data derived from them, including changes of street patterns over time.
Jacobs concludes by summarizing the practical design qualities and strategies that have contributed most to the making of great streets.

Cartas a Theo

Cartas a Theo
Gogh, Vincent van
2011
Buenos Aires : Adriana Hidalgo Editora.   397 p.

Browne, Edmundo
2013
Santiago, Chile : Ocho Libros.   [268] p.

Cellophane house

Cellophane house
Kieran Timberlake
Sandy Isenstadt
Billie Faircloth.
2011
Philadelphia : KieranTimberlake.   145 p.
Resumen : Cellophane house chronicles the conception, assembly, display and disassembly of a five-story, off-site fabricated dwelling made of transparent, recyclable materials.
The house was commissioned by The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) for the exhibition Home Delivery: Fabricating the Modern Dwelling in 2008.
Designed by Stephen Kieran and James Timberlake and their architecture firm KieranTimberlake, Cellophane House™ takes a radically different approach to off-site fabrication, reinventing the way buildings are assembled, what they are made of, and the experience of living in them.
It demonstrates an end-of-life strategy that, enabled by an innovative structural frame and variety of connectors, makes disassembly and waste-diversion inherent in the building’s construction.
The book contains a detailed discussion of the house and 105 color photographs and illustrations.

Density is home

Density is home
Fernández Per, Aurora
Mozas, Javier
Arpa, Javier
2011
Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain : A+T Architecture Publishers.   397 p.
Resumen : Our home is now in the city which is compacted and mixed up, which grows inwards and is renewed.
We are returning to the historic city, to the modern city, to the post-industrial city, we are re-densifying the expansive city of the last decade.
We are regenerating the narrow plots of the medieval urban grids, the 19th century urban extensions and the new-old cities of the 60s.
We are returning to the built-up city driven by the need to save on resources, but this return cannot be a reluctant one.
Density is Home echoes these types of city -dispersed, expansive, modern, the core of the city and the recycled city- through 37 projects on collective housing.
14 case studies have been extracted among them in order to analyze the desirable home.
The book forms part of the Density series, initiated by a+t in 2002, which became a reference for publications about collective housing worldwide.

Code

Code : between operation and narration
Gleiniger, Andrea, editora
Vrachliotis, Georg, editora
2010
Basel : Birkhäuser.   120 p.
Resumen : The process of coding is a systematic experimentation with signs, symbols, and the construction of larger cultural meanings.
The fourth volume in the series Kontext Architektur examines the architectural-historical and -theoretical relevance of the concept of code from various perspectives.
The authors and editors start from the premise that this concept makes for new ways of translating architecture into language.
Thus, the dominance of computer simulation makes it clear that the building is no longer merely a vehicle for signs, but literally also their product.
The code has penetrated, as it were, from the exterior of the building into its interior, into its structure.
We are dealing with both a socio-cultural as well as with a mathematical and formal notion of code.
The goal of this book is thus to arrive at a critical grasp of the contours of this vibrant conceptual tension between the cultural and the formal, the outside and the inside, while also formulating questions for further exploration that are relevant for architecture.
