Human Centered Design

Human Centered Design : toolkit
IDEO (Firma)
2011
United States of America, IDEO.   187 p.
Resumen :  For years, businesses have used human-centered design to develop innovative solutions. Why not apply the same approach to overcome challenges in the nonprofit world? This project, funded by International Development Enterprise (IDE) as part of a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, sought to provide NGOs and social enterprises with the tools to do just that. IDEO, in collaboration with nonprofit groups ICRW and Heifer International, developed the HCD Toolkit to help international staff and volunteers understand a community's needs in new ways, find innovative solutions to meet those needs, and deliver solutions with financial sustainability in mind. The HCD Toolkit was designed specifically for NGOs and social enterprises that work with impoverished communities in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The free kit, available for download here, walks users through the human-centered design process and supports them in activities such as building listening skills, running workshops, and implementing ideas. The process has led to innovations such as the HeartStart defibrillator, Cleanwell natural antibacterial products, and the Blood Donor System for the Red Cross — all of which have enhanced the lives of millions of people. The HCD toolkit has been used by organizations throughout the developing world, including Acumen Fund, AyurVAID, Heifer International, ICRW, IDE, Micro Drip, and VisionSpring.

Discourses in place

Discourses in place : language in the material world
Scollon, Ron
Wong Scollon, Suzie
2003
London ; New York : Routledge.  xiii, 242 p.
Resumen :  Discourses in Place is essential reading for anyone with an interest in language and the way we communicate. Written by leaders in the field, this text argues that we can only interpret the meaning of public texts like road signs, notices and brand logos by considering the social and physical world that surrounds them. Drawing on a wide range of real examples, from signs in the Chinese mountains, to urban centres in Austria, Italy, North America and Hong Kong, this textbook equips students with the methodology and models they need to undertake their own research in 'geosemiotics', the key interface between semiotics and the physical world. Discourses in Place is highly illustrated, containing real examples of language in the material world, including a 'how to use this book' section, group and individual activities, and a glossary of key terms

101 Design methods

101 Design methods : a structured approach for driving innovation in your organization
Kumar, Vijay
2013
Hoboken, New Jersey : John Wiley and Sons. 326 p.
Resumen: Unlike other books on the subject, 101 Design Methods approaches the practice of creating new products, services, and customer experiences as a science, rather than an art, providing a practical set of collaborative tools and methods for planning and defining successful new offerings. Strategists, managers, designers, and researchers who undertake the challenge of innovation, despite a lack of established procedures and a high risk of failure, will find this an invaluable resource. Novices can learn from it; managers can plan with it; and practitioners of innovation can improve the quality of their work by referring to it.

Design methods

Design methods
Jones, J. Christopher
Mitchell, C. Thomas
Jones, Timothy Emlyn
1992
New York : John Wiley and Sons. 407 p.
Resumen: As Jones states in the preface: "Alongside the old idea of design as the drawing of objects that are then to be built or manufactured there are many new ideas of what it is, all very different: * designing as the process of devising not individual products but whole systems or environments such as airports, transportation, hypermarkets, educational curricula, broadcasting schedules, welfare schemes, banking systems, computer networks; * design as participation, the involvement of the public in the decision-making process; * design as creativity, which is supposed to be potentially present in everyone; * design as an educational discipline that unites arts and science and perhaps can go further than either; * and now the idea of designing Without a Product, as a process or way of living in itself." Design Methods first evaluates traditional methods such as design-by-drawing and shows how they do not adequately address the complexity of demands upon today's designer. The book then provides 35 new methods that have been developed to assist designers and planners to become more sensitive to user needs. These methods move beyond a focus on the product to the thought that precedes it. Throughout, the book's emphasis on integrating creative and rational skills directs readers away from narrow specialization to a broader view of design. The new methods are described and classified in a way that makes it easier for designers and planners to find a method that suits a particular design situation. They include logical procedures such as systematic search and systems engineering, data gathering procedures such as literature searching and the writing of questionnaires, innovative procedures such as brainstorming and synectic and system transformation, and evaluative procedures such as specification writing and the selection of criteria. Offering a wider view--accompanied by appropriate skills--than can be obtained from the teaching of any specialized design profession, Design Methods is important reading for designers and teachers in numerous fields. It will be welcomed by engineers, architects, planners, and landscape architects, as well as by interior, graphic, product, and industrial designers.

Johnson, Kara1
2014

Resumen: Materials are the stuff of design. From the very beginning of human history, materials have been taken from the natural world and shaped, modified, and adapted for everything from primitive tools to modern electronics. This renowned book by noted materials engineering author Mike Ashby and industrial designer Kara Johnson explores the role of materials and materials processing in product design, with a particular emphasis on creating both desired aesthetics and functionality. Packaging

Packaging : manual de diseño y producción
Stewart, Bill
2008
Barcelona : Gustavo Gili.   224 p.

Inside / Outside

Inside / Outside : from the basics to the practice of design
Grear, Malcolm
1993
New York : Van Nostrand Reinhold. 301 p.
Resumen: Renowned artist and design legend Malcolm Grear has permanently shaped the design world with his work, lecturing, writing and teaching. From the Basics to the Practice of Design, combines the practical with the philosophical and the concrete with the abstract. Deftly and sparingly capturing the essence of his subject matter, Grear offers unique insight into the design process with images and forms drawn from nature, typography, art and design. These examples from both his teaching (inside) and professional practice (outside) begin with design problems and illuminate the processes by which the best solutions are found. Grear skillfully bridges the gap between design theory and real-world practice.
