The cultures of cities

The cultures of cities
Zukin, Sharon
1995
Cambridge, MA : Blackwell.   xiv, 322 p.
Resumen : How do cities use culture today? Building on the experience of New York as a "culture capital" Sharon Zukin shows how three notions of culture - as ethnicity, aesthetic, and marketing tool - are reshaping urban places and conflicts over revitalization.
She rejects the idea that cities have either a singular urban culture or many different subcultures to argue that cultures are constantly negotiated in the city's central spaces - the streets, parks, shops, museums, and restaurants - which are the great public spaces of modernity.
While cultural gentrification may contribute to making our cities both safer and more civilised places to live, it has its darker side.
Beneath the perceptions of "civility" and "security" nurtured by cultural strategies, Zukin shows an aggressive private-sector bid for control of public space, a relentless drive for expansion by art museums and other non-profit cultural institutions, and an increasing redesign of the built environment for the purposes of social control. Tying these developments to a new "symbolic economy" based on tourism, media and entertainment, Zukin traces the connections between real estate development and popular expression, and between elite visions of the arts and more democratic representations. Going beyond the immigrants, artists, street peddlers, and security guards who are the key figures in the symbolic economy, Zukin asks: Who really occupies the central spaces of cities? And whose culture is imposed as public culture? Combining cultural critique, interviews, autobiography and ethnography, The Culture of Cities is a compelling account of the public spaces of modernity as they are transformed into new, more troubling landscapes.

Cities for people, not for profit

Cities for people, not for profit : critical urban theory and the right to the city critical urban theory and the right to the city
Brenner, Neil, ed.
Marcuse, Peter, ed.
Mayer, Margit
2012
London ; New York : Routledge.   xii, 284 p.
Resumen :  The worldwide financial crisis has sent shock-waves of accelerated economic restructuring, regulatory reorganization and sociopolitical conflict through cities around the world.
It has also given new impetus to the struggles of urban social movements emphasizing the injustice, destructiveness and unsustainability of capitalist forms of urbanization.
This book contributes analyses intended to be useful for efforts to roll back contemporary profit-based forms of urbanization, and to promote alternative, radically democratic and sustainable forms of urbanism. The contributors provide cutting-edge analyses of contemporary urban restructuring, including the issues of neoliberalization, gentrification, colonization, "creative" cities, architecture and political power, sub-prime mortgage foreclosures and the ongoing struggles of "right to the city" movements. At the same time, the book explores the diverse interpretive frameworks - critical and otherwise - that are currently being used in academic discourse, in political struggles, and in everyday life to decipher contemporary urban transformations and contestations. The slogan, "cities for people, not for profit," sets into stark relief what the contributors view as a central political question involved in efforts, at once theoretical and practical, to address the global urban crises of our time. Drawing upon European and North American scholarship in sociology, politics, geography, urban planning and urban design, the book provides useful insights and perspectives for citizens, activists and intellectuals interested in exploring alternatives to contemporary forms of capitalist urbanization.

Metromarxism

Metromarxism : a marxist tale of the city
Merrifield, Andy
2002
New York ; London : Routledge.   xi, 212 p.
Resumen : "Metromarxism" discusses Marxism's relationship with the city from the 1850s to the present by way of biographical chapters on figures from the Marxist tradition, including Marx, Walter Benjamin, Guy Debord, and David Harvey.
Each chapter combines interesting biographical anecdotes with an accessible analysis of each individual's contribution to an always-transforming Marxist theory of the city. He suggests that the interplay between the city as center of economic and social life and its potential for progressive change generated a major corpus of work. That work has been key in advancing progressive political and social transformations

Chocolate nations

Chocolate nations : living and dying for cocoa in west Africa
Ryan, Órla
2011
London : Zed Books ; New York : Distributed in the USA exclusively by Palgrave Macmillan.   viii, 182 p.
Resumen : Chocolate is one of the world's most everyday luxuries, the very word conjuring up a hint of the forbidden and a taste of the decadent.
Every year, more chocolate is sold in the West even as obesity and health fears grow.
Yet the story behind the chocolate bar is rarely one of luxury.
The crop provides a lifeline for millions of farmers in West Africa, which produces about 70% of the world's cocoa and is crucial to the economies and politics of Ghana and Ivory Coast. Chocolate Nations examines the causes of farmer poverty, placing the story of these producers in the context of the commodity producers' global battle to make more money from their crops.
Mixing economic analysis with the human stories of the African rebels, advertising executives and industry insiders, this book tells the compelling story of how chocolate bars get on supermarket shelves

Las parroquias de Concepción

Las parroquias de Concepción
Rebolledo Riquelme, Bernardo
Bahamonde Barría, José Luis
2014
[Concepción] : Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción.   136 p.

Arcana

Arcana
Vicente, Cristóbal
2011
Santiago, Chile : Editorial Flandes Indiano.   xxi, 301 p.

Governing the commons

Governing the commons : the evolution of institutions for collective action
Ostrom, Elinor
1990
Cambridge ; New York : Cambridge University Press.   xxviii, 280 p.
Resumen: Elinor Ostrom here provides a unique body of empirical data to explore conditions under which common pool resource problems have been satisfactorily or unsatisfactorily solved.
Dr. Ostrom first describes three models most frequently used as the foundation for recommending state or market solutions.
She then outlines theoretical and empirical alternatives to these models in order to illustrate the diversity of possible solutions.
In the following chapters she uses institutional analysis to examine different ways--both successful and unsuccessful--of governing the commons.
In contrast to the proposition of the tragedy of the commons argument, common pool problems sometimes are solved by voluntary organizations rather than by a coercive state.
Among the cases considered are communal tenure in meadows and forests, irrigation communities and other water rights, and fisheries.

Poblamiento urbano y vivienda

Cosmopolitanism and the geographies of freedom

Cosmopolitanism and the geographies of freedom
Harvey, David
2009
New York : Columbia University Press.   x, 339 p.
Resumen : Liberty and freedom are frequently invoked to justify political action.
Presidents as diverse as Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, and George W. Bush have built their policies on some version of these noble values.
Yet in practice, idealist agendas often turn sour as they confront specific circumstances on the ground. Demonstrated by incidents at Abu Ghraib and Guantánamo Bay, the pursuit of liberty and freedom can lead to violence and repression, undermining our trust in universal theories of liberalism, neoliberalism, and cosmopolitanism. Combining his passions for politics and geography, David Harvey charts a cosmopolitan order more appropriate to an emancipatory form of global governance. Political agendas tend to fail, he argues, because they ignore the complexities of geography.
Incorporating geographical knowledge into the formation of social and political policy is therefore a necessary condition for genuine democracy. Harvey begins with an insightful critique of the political uses of freedom and liberty, especially during the George W. Bush administration. Then, through an ontological investigation into geography's foundational concepts—space, place, and environment—he radically reframes geographical knowledge as a basis for social theory and political action. As Harvey makes clear, the cosmopolitanism that emerges is rooted in human experience rather than illusory ideals and brings us closer to achieving the liberation we seek.

Informotion animated infographics

Informotion animated infographics
Finke, Tim, ed.
Manger, Sebastian, ed.
Fichtel, Stefan, ed.
2012
Berlín : Gestalten.   208 p.
Resumen : The first reference book on the fundamentals of animated information graphics. At the nexus of design and journalism, the field of information graphics offers some of the most exciting and dynamic work for creatives.
Today, even more so than static versions, animated information graphics are serving to communicate complex correlations succinctly.
The production of such animations on the basis of up-to-the-minute data is already common practice in select TV programs. Now, these moving formats are finding wider application in television and on the internet, as well as on an increasing number of mobile devices, and in public places.
They can be seen in editorial contexts and in the areas of advertising and corporate communication.
Thanks to current advances in hardware and software, the sky is the limit for the forms of animated infographics that can be created.
But a wide range of technical possibilities does not always mean high quality in terms of content and presentation. Especially when conveying crucial or sensitive information, effective communication hinges upon the details of the execution. Consequently, those who work or want to work successfully with animated information graphics must be well versed in all available tools and formats.0 Informotion is the first book to document the fundamentals needed to create compelling animated infographics and to explain them with numerous examples.
It focuses on key aspects of visualizing data, current forms of information graphics, and future possibilities for moving images. The publication also outlines the factors that improve the viewer's ability to absorb information.
Each book contains a unique log-in code for accessing a wide selection of animated information graphics as well as their making-of videos online.
The interplay between the detailed descriptions in the print edition and the diverse motion material makes Informotion an essential reference for students and newcomers as well as a trusty guide for design and media professionals.
The book is edited by Tim Finke and Sebastian Manger with Stefan Fichtel. Fichtel, who also wrote the preface, was the head of infographics at KircherBurkhard for many years.
He now runs ixtract, his own studio with clients such as National Geographic.

Capital spaces

Capital spaces : the multiple complex public spaces of a global city
Carmona, Matthew
Matos Wunderlich, Filipa
2012
London : Routledge.   xiii, 304 p.
Resumen: In recent years it has become common-place to hear claims that public space in cities across the globe has become the exclusive preserve of the wealthy and privileged, at the expense of the needs of wider society.
Whether it is the privatization of public space through commerical developments like shopping malls and business parks, the gentrification of existing spaces by campaigns against perceived anti-social behaviour or the increasing domination of public areas by private transport in the form of the car, the urban public space is seen as under threat. But are things really that bad? Has the market really become the sole factor that influences the treatment of public space? Have the financial and personal interests of the few really come to dominate those of the many? To answer these questions Matthew Carmona and Filipa Wunderlich have carried out a detailed investigation of the modern public spaces of London, that most global of cities.
They have developed a new typology of public spaces applicable to all cities, a typology that demonstrates that to properly assess contemporary urban places means challenging the over-simplification of current critiques.
Global cities are made up of many overlapping public spaces, good and bad; this book shows how to analyze this complexity, and to understand it.

The structure of the ordinary

The structure of the ordinary : form and control in the built environment
Habraken, N. J.
1998
Cambridge, Mass. : MIT Press.   xxi, 359 p.
Resumen:  According to N. J. Habraken, intimate and unceasing interaction between people and the forms they inhabit uniquely defines built environment.
The Structure of the Ordinary, the culmination of decades of environmental observation and design research, is a recognition and analysis of everyday environment as the wellspring of urban design and formal architecture.
The author's central argument is that built environment is universally organized by the Orders of Form, Place, and Understanding.
These three fundamental, interwoven principles correspond roughly to physical, biological, and social domains. Historically, "ordinary" environment was the background against which architects built the "extraordinary." Drawing upon extensive examples from archaeological and contemporary sites worldwide, the author illustrates profound recent shifts in the structure of everyday environment.
One effect of these transformations, Habraken argues, has been the loss of implicit common understanding that previously enabled architects to formally enhance and innovate while still maintaining environmental coherence. Consequently, architects must now undertake a study of the ordinary as the fertile common ground in which form- and place-making are rooted.
In focusing on built environment as an autonomous entity distinct from the societies and natural environments that jointly create it, this book lays the foundation for a new dialogue on methodology and pedagogy, in support of a more informed approach to professional intervention.

Civilizing american cities

Civilizing American cities : writings on city landscapes
Olmsted, Frederick Law
1997
New York : Da Capo Press.   310 p.
Resumen:  Frederick Law Olmsted (1822–1903) designed New York City's Central Park, Brooklyn's Prospect Park, Chicago's South Park and Jackson Park, Montreal's Mount Royal Park, the park systems of Boston and Buffalo, and many others.
But Olmsted also designed parkways and neighborhoods, reshaping cities around their parks.
He thus reinvented the American urban landscape as a democratic outdoor setting that encouraged a new kind of participation in city life.
Olmsted was one of the most gifted of American writers of his generation: prior to designing Central Park, he had written five important books, including The Cotton Kingdom (an account of his travels in the slave states), and his writings on American landscapes are unfailingly lively, eloquent, and passionate.
Civilizing American Cities collects Olmsted's plans for New York, San Francisco, Buffalo, Montreal, Chicago, and Boston; his suburban plans for Berkeley, California and Riverside, Illinois; and a generous helping of his writings on urban landscape in general.
These selections, expertly edited and introduced, are not only enjoyable but essential reading for anyone interested in the history—and the future—of America's cities.

Artes visuales 20 años: 1970-1990

Artes visuales 20 años: 1970-1990
Saul, Ernesto
1991
Santiago : Ministerio de Educación, División de Cultura, Departamento de Planes y Programas Culturales.  190p.

Kieran Timberlake

Kieran Timberlake : inquiry
Wallick, Karl
2011
New York : Rizzol.   255 p.
Resumen:  This book is organized around ten gerunds: bending, coupling, filtering, inserting, offsetting, outlining, overlapping, puncturing, reflecting, and tuning.
This is a lovely and informative way to view their work.
The reason behind the book’s organized is explained by Karl Wallick in the preface. Wallick writes, “Architecture is not exactly whole: we remember instances, elements, and details, but rarely are the experiences and sensations in architectural experience comprehensive.
The context of what we do as architects is also fragmentary, even as it seeks to be resolved comprehensively. Rather than insisting on the totality of complete works, architecture might be better understood as an infinite matrix of detailed moments.” Project Description: An insider’s glimpse into how the natural environment, energy, the economics of construction, and the processes of collaboration inform KieranTimberlake’s celebrated practice.
KieranTimberlake: Inquiry comprehensively documents the beauty and relevance of KieranTimberlake’s unique and celebrated vision. By undertaking a path of research into potential technologies that alter fabrication and delivery methods, and that influence the way we live in our environments, KieranTimberlake endeavors to reshape our expectations of architecture. Nineteen residential, commercial, academic, and civic projects are featured here, including the firm’s own dynamic studio; buildings for such prestigious institutions as Yale University, Cornell University, and the University of Pennsylvania; and the new U.S. Embassy in London.

Beautiful evidence

Beautiful evidence
Tufte, Edward R.
2006
Cheshire, Conn. : Graphics Press.   213 p.
Resumen: Science and art have in common intense seeing, the wide-eyed observing that generates visual information. Beautiful Evidence is about how seeing turns into showing, how data and evidence turn into explanation.
The book identifies excellent and effective methods for showing nearly every kind of information, suggests many new designs (including sparklines), and provides analytical tools for assessing the credibility of evidence presentations (which are seen from both sides: how to produce and how to consume presentations).
For alert consumers of presentations, there are chapters on diagnosing evidence corruption and PowerPoint pitches. Beautiful Evidence concludes with 2 chapters that leave the world of pixel and paper flatland representations - and move onto seeing and thinking in space land, the real-land of three-space and time.

Arquitectura de la memoria

Arquitectura de la memoria : haciendas poblanas
Guzmán Alvarez, Miguel Ambrosio
2013
Puebla, México : Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla.   523 p.

Landscapes of transition

Landscapes of transition : an optimistic decade of Croatian architectural culture
Ibelings, Hans (ed.)
Ivanisin, Krunoslav (ed.)
2009
Zagreb, Croatia : Croatian Architects' Association ; UPI-2M Plus d.o.o. ; Sun.   204 p.
Resumen:  The book ‘Landscapes of Transition - An Optimistic Decade of Croatian Architectural Culture’ presents twenty most outstanding contemporary projects in Croatia.
Each project illustrates the way in which architecture can deal with moments of substantial social change that happen in not always the most favourable circumstances. As something radically different than for instance “Irish” or “Greek contemporary architecture”, “Croatian contemporary architecture” does not exist.
But something else does: distinct “Croatian architectural culture”; a complex of specific adjustments and adaptations to a web of relations that defines the way our physical environment irreversibly changes. Twenty most outstanding contemporary projects, each within its own specific conditions, illustrate the way architecture can deal with moments of substantial social change that happen in not always the most favorable circumstances, and are brought together by Croatian architect Krunoslav Ivanisin and A10 Chief editor Hans Ibelings.
The manifold transitional state is the key condition. Twenty projects are not selected for illustrating some particular “style” or specific “school” of architecture, but because they work not only as paradigms of the current state of “Croatian architectural culture” but also as indicators of wider social situation.
