De este m odo, Geertz restaura el ideario de Kroeber y Boas, para los que se trataba de leer el quehacer humano como un texto y la acción simbólica como un drama en el cual se manifiesta por sí misma la capacidad humana de expresarse en una retórica autoconsciente. Desde finales de la década de los sesenta, la disciplina que cultiva Clifford Geertz se ha calificado como «antropología simbólica». No se trata de una escuela, sino de un modo de concebir el trabajo antropológico. La concepción de lo simbólico de Geertz se opone a otras formas de entender el simbolismo, como la de Marshall Sahlins, Victor Turner o Mary Douglas. Su enfoque incluye diversas variantes, que requieren maneras de interpretar en varios niveles. La antropología de Geertz contribuyó a un giro fundamental en esta disciplina, que consiste en relativizar el punto de mira del antropólogo mismo y que cuestiona sus condicionamientos y prejuicios como factores que influyen en su trabajo.

Resumen : Este libro estudia el edificio de la fábrica como un organismo dedicado específicamente a la manufactura y la producción; un edificio que se constituyó fundamentalmente con la Revolución Industrial y que no ha parado de evolucionar hasta nuestros días.
Una fábrica puede ser una casucha anodina o una construcción ejemplar, en el sentido más amplio posible. Desde el siglo XVIII en adelante, las fábricas han sido buenos indicadores de diversos aspectos: de la revolución (técnica y social), de la innovación (en el diseño y en los procesos) y de su momento (político y económico). Como tales, las fábricas son esencialmente efímeras, pues reflejan con cierta precisión las circunstancias exactas de cada momento y cada lugar.
En sí misma tan amenazante como estimulante, la fábrica ha ofrecido imágenes tan negras o tan blancas como exigiese el argumento. Ningún otro tipo de edificio ha plasmado mejor esas ideas, siempre fugaces, de la modernidad; y sus posibilidades radicales se ha exagerado más allá de lo imaginable.
Aunque no trata sólo de arquitectura, este estudio significa el reconocimiento de un género propio de la arquitectura y de su historia, un género cuyo conocimiento general- por estar en un ámbito habitualmente sustraído a la vida cotidiana y por su condición específicamente técnica- es considerablemente menor que el de otros tipos de edificios, lo cual no ha ayudado demasiado a su apreciación arquitectónica. Por tanto, este libro viene a ser un nuevo salto hacia la perspectiva específica de la arquitectura de la fábrica en su conjunto, en dimensión global e internacional que actualiza y sobrepasa las de sus antecesores; y ello no sólo porque abarca acontecimientos de l máxima actualidad, sino también por la rica información sobre los protagonistas, la historia y las vicisitudes de gestación y el devenir de los edificios.

Resumen : Oil pulses through our daily lives. It is the plastic we touch, the food we eat, and the way we move. Oil politics in the twentieth century was about the management of abundance, state power and market growth. Resumen : Data visualization is currently a very active and vital area of research, teaching and development. The term unites the established field of scientific visualization and the more recent field of information visualization. The success of data visualization is due to the soundness of the basic idea behind it: the use of computer-generated images to gain insight and knowledge from data and its inherent patterns and relationships. A second premise is the utilization of the broad bandwidth of the human sensory system in steering and interpreting complex processes, and simulations involving data sets from diverse scientific disciplines and large collections of abstract data from many sources.
